Episode summary

The episode introduces Sartre’s distinction between being-in-itself and being-for-itself, his account of bad faith and the unsettling responsibility implied by the claim that existence precedes essence.

It then follows Simone de Beauvoir’s use of existentialist analysis to expose the social construction of woman as the Other, before turning to Camus’s defence of revolt, political freedom and moral limits. Their disagreements show that existentialism was never a single doctrine.

Questions explored

  • What does Sartre mean by bad faith?
  • How does de Beauvoir connect freedom to oppression and material independence?
  • Why does Camus resist both nihilism and political absolutism?
  • Can radical freedom support a shared ethics?
