JANUARY 26, 2026 · 50 MINUTES · HISTORY OF IDEAS CLUB · REVOLUTION OF THOUGHT
How did the medieval contest between spiritual and secular power shape Reformation arguments about conscience, law and the emerging modern state?
Episode summary
The Gregorian Reforms sought to impose coherence on canon law and clarify the relationship between Church and State. At their centre stood a lasting question: how far should secular authority be subordinated to spiritual power?
Four centuries later, Martin Luther challenged the mediation of conscience through human authority, while Philip Melanchthon attempted to order civil jurisdictions through shared principles of natural law. The seminar asks whether the Reformers resolved the conflict between ecclesial and civil law or transformed it into a new political problem.
